1. What is a Group-Graphic?

Nokia 3300, 5210, 6100, 6110, 6130, 6150, 6210, 6250, 6310(i), 6510, 6650, 6800, 7110, 7210, 7250, 8210, 8260, 8310, 8810, 8850, 8890, 8910 support five or more different Caller groups. You can add names from your phonebook to these groups and if somebody calls, the selected Group-Graphic is displayed. Consult the manual of the phone for more information (also about profiles).

2. What can Group-Graphic Editor do for me?

The editor gives you the possibility to edit these graphics on your PC and upload them via IR to your or via SMS to your or any other phone worldwide. You can also edit normal and big Operator-Logos (.NOL format).

3. What is an Operator-Logo?

Nokia 3210, 3310, 3300, 3330, 3410, 3510(i), 3650, 5100, 5110, 5130, 5210, 5510, 6100, 6110, 6130, 6150, 6210, 6220, 6250, 6310(i), 6510, 6600, 6610, 6650, 6800, 7110, 7210, 7250, 7650, 8210, 8310, 8810, 8850, 8890, 8910, 9110(i), 9210(i), Samsung N620, T100, S100 support an Operator-Logo. Usually only one line with the name of your operator is displayed when phone is idle, but it is possible to save exactly ONE logo to the phone, which gets displayed instead of the name of the selected operator. An already existing logo will be overwritten only if you save the new logo. If you go abroad, you will see the normal operator-text there. Nokia 7110, 6210 and 6250 support also bigger logos. Important: Nokia 51xx can receive logos only with software 5.11 or later, enter *#0000# to check the version. Nokia 6190 only with software 5.38 or later, enter *#6190# to check.

4. What can Operator-Logo Uploader do for me?

You can change the the boring line with the operator-name to your very own personal logo with your PC and upload them via IR to your or via SMS to your or any other phone worldwide. Make sure that your operator is set in the Operator-List in the right side. You can also use Group-Graphic files (.NGG format). Please read all questions about Group-Graphic Editor, as they are also valid for Operator-Logo Uploader. If you send big logos to a 6210, 6250, 7110, 7210, 7250 then two SMS are sent. The registered version can also optimize the logos (depends on logo) for only one SMS.

5. How can I get back the original Operator-Text in the phone?

Very easy, just scroll up in the Operator-List (in Operator-Logo Uploader) and send & save the top-most item called "Clear Operator-Logo", then the original name will appear again.

6. What other things do I need to get started?

You need a PC with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000 or XP. You also need VBRun60sp6.exe, a self-extracting executable file, which installs the latest version of the required Microsoft run-time files, available for download from the Microsoft Software Library (see download-page). Set your Windows color-settings to 16 bit or higher for best results.

7. What do those "Runtime" error messages mean?

If "Wrong Version Of Run-Time DLL" or "Cannot start main setup program!" appears, then VBRun60sp6.exe is missing, see previous question and answer. If installation works, but starting the programs shows a message like "Component "COMCTL32.OCX" / "MSCOMM32.OCX" or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid" or does not show anything at all with XP, then you also need CTL32COMM32.zip, which installs and registers missing ActiveX-Controls (see download-page).

8. What else do I need for sending graphics as SMS?

For sending graphics as SMS you need an 8-bit and User Data Header supporting SMS-Center. If you are not sure about your SMS-Center, then you can ask the hotline of your gsm-provider or try it on your own. Just send a Group-Graphic from your own phone to your own phone by selecting Names / Caller Groups / VIP (or any other) / Group Graphic / Send graphic / Your Own Number. Your phone then should send and receive a SMS and say Group Graphic Received. If it says Message connot be displayed here, then your SMS-Center does not support smart data and you have to use another (maybe foreign) provider. You can also borrow a SIM-card of a provider with compatible SMS-Center and save your logo in your phone. Make sure that you enter all phone-numbers in international format (with country-prefix, e.g. +49172..) in my software.

9. What can I do with my 51xx/61xx?

For the 51xx / 61xx you need the Nokia Cellular Data Suite with the supplied cable. Then you can talk to the 61xx via IR or cable (51xx only via cable), send graphics to other phones via SMS, store graphics in the SMS-Inbox for later use and also read the phonebook of the phone. The 51xx can receive only Operator-Logos, some very old 51xx can't. It can send Operator-Logos and Group-Graphics though. Without the Data Suite you need an IR-port to upload graphics directly via IR to your own 61xx. For 61xx with IR (with or without Data Suite) you do NOT need the Microsoft IR-Monitor, you have to disable it in Start / Settings / Control-Panel of Windows if it is installed.

10. Which version of Data Suite do I need for 51xx/61xx?

For the 51xx/61xx you need version 1.2, 1.2a, 2.0a or 3.0a, if you just want to send graphics (with another Nokia phone) then some users have reported that also version 1.0x works for them (with its interface disabled). Visit the Nokia Cellular Data Suite homepage for more details. Don't forget to install the 2.0a Upgrade or 3.0a Upgrade in case you use 2.0 or 3.0!

11. How do I upload directly via IR without SMS to 61xx?

Set your physical IR Port in Options / IR Port (in most cases COM2, consult your pc manual), disable the Microsoft IR-Monitor and / or the Data Suite, activate IR on your 61xx, then click the Upload via IR to 61xx button. If the transfer stops at 30% or later, then your connection is not strong enough, put the 61xx closer to the IR Port of your PC, make sure that the IR-cover is clean and restart the IR-connection in 61xx. Note: Only 61xx can do direct upload via IR to own phone!

12. How do I send graphics via SMS?

Set your virtual serial port in Options / Serial Port. Check Start / Settings / Control-Panel / Modem in Windows for port-number. For sending connect phone via cable OR activate IR on your phone and establish an IR-connection, then click the Send as SMS button. If transfer hangs with IR then limit the speed of your IR Port to 19.200 baud or similar.

13. What can I do with my 8810?

You need an IR-port for the pc, the Windows 95 and 98 driver for Nokia 8810 (n8810.inf), the Microsoft IR-Monitor and the guide Installing the Nokia 8810 to work as a Data/fax Modem in Win 95/98 (for IR). You can not use a cable. Then follow the instructions above at Send as SMS. More interesting information about Nokia 8810 with Data Suite and IR is available here.

14. What can I do with my 9110/9210?

The 9110 can only receive Operator-Logos via SMS. It can not send Operator-Logos and Group-Graphics itself. You need another phone (51xx/61xx/..) for sending. The 9210 (as reported with software 3.54) can also send via SMS with activated Faxmodem.

15. What can I do with my 3210/3310/3330?

The 3210/3310/3330 can only receive Operator-Logos or Picture-Messages via SMS. It can not send Operator-Logos and Group-Graphics itself, because it does not have an official data-interface with drivers. You need another phone (51xx/61xx/..) for sending.

16. What can I do with my 8210/8310?

You need an IR-port for the pc, the Windows 95/98 Modem Driver for Nokia 8210 (n8210.inf) for 8210 / Modem Setup for the Nokia 8310 (Modem_Setup_for_Nokia_8310.exe) for 8310, the Microsoft IR-Monitor and the guide Using the Nokia 8210 with Win 95/98 (s8210_win9x.pdf) for IR. 20. Help! My phone is not supported?

More on this soon...

21. What known problems do exist?

There exist some other problems, but I can not reproduce most of them here, because I do not have the hardware / software.
• With PC Suite you can not use the virtual COM-Port with my software as it is in use by the Nokia Connection Monitor or Nokia Tray Application which is installed with PC Suite. Solution for not-so-advanced users, use a tool like AutoRuns to enable or disable the below mentioned registry-keys. Reboot after enabling or disabling the keys. Solution for advanced users: In your registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\ remove Nokia Connection Monitor (PC Suite 4) or Nokia Tray Application and ServiceLayer and DataLayer (PC Suite 5) keys and create shortcuts to the files on your desktop instead, just in case you want to use it later. Reboot after this or - for very advanced users - kill MPAPI3S.EXE and NclConf.exe (PC Suite 4) or MPAPI3S.EXE and ServiceLayer.exe and ncltray.exe (PC Suite 5) tasks to be able to use the port.
• The current software in 6310 does not display big operatorlogos in the correct way.
• With Windows 2000 and IR you can not use Send as SMS as there is no virtual COM-Port support. You need this patch from Microsoft "that allows Windows 2000 to communicate with infrared-enabled mobile devices". Due to bugs in this patch from Microsoft (Run-time error 8020 during communication) you should better use the great and free IrCOMM2k from Jan Kiszka at www.ircomm2k.de (click English Pages there) which works perfect for me and many others! Don't forget to select the new COM-Port in my software in menu Edit / Options / Serial Port.
• With Windows XP and IR you might also get Run-time error 8020 during communication, install the above mentioned IrCOMM2k and it should be solved.
• With Nokia 6210/6250/6310 the SMS-Center can not be read from phone, please enter by hand.
• With Data Suite 2.0 the Operator-Logo Uploader may hang while Storing to SMS-Inbox at 55%, fixed in the 2.0a Upgrade (see above). [Rui Costa]
• Some SMS-Centers trash pixels, that's not a problem in my software but the SMS-Center destroys the binary SMS, please complain at your operator-hotline.
• Users have reported that the implementation of the IR port in most Toshiba notebooks is that it does NOT get assigned to a COM port, so direct upload and use with Data Suite would not work. [Daniel Lewkovitz] - See next question for an advanced solution.

22. How do I use Windows 98 and IR with 61xx?

That's for advanced users only, detailed information is available here.

23. Can I use my normal modem or ISDN or internet (TCP/IP)?

No, you can't. You need a direct connection to your mobile phone, via cable and Data Suite or via IR, see also above.

24. How do I use Data Suite with Tekram IRmate 210?

For use with Nokia phones you need Tekram's tool DirectCOMM and Windows 95. Read all information there and also the IRmate 210 homepage. Note: Direct Upload via IR to 61xx works neither with nor without this tool, only SMS via Data Suite is possible.

25. What other typical informationen is stored in a phone?

IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity). Enter *#06# in your phone, then a 15-digits number will be displayed which identifies your phone worldwide:
XXXXXX XX XXXXXX X
6 digits: TAC = Type Approval Code (first 2 digits = country code of the approval-country)
2 digits: FAC = Final Assembly Code (10 or 20 for Nokia)
6 digits: SNR = Main Serial Nr.
1 digit: SP = Spare (always 0)

Software Version. Geben Sie *#0000# in das Handy ein (beim alten Nokia 8110: *#8110#), dann erscheinen 3 Zeilen Text im Display des Handys:
V XX.XX (Software Version)
DD-MM-YY (Date of the Software Release)
ZZZ-Z (Phone Type)

26. What is a Picture-Message?

Nokia 3210, 3300, 3310, 3330, 3410, 3510(i), 3650, 5100, 5210, 5510, 6100, 6210, 6220, 6250, 6310(i), 6510, 6600, 6610, 6650, 6800, 7210, 7250, 7650, 8210, 8310, 8850, 8890, 8910, Ericsson T20, T29, T68, Samsung N500, N620, R210m, T100, S100 support Picture-Messages. These messages contain a graphic (72x28) and your own text, max. 121 chars. If you have received a picturemessage in your phone you can edit the text and send it to somebody else via SMS. A picturemessage consists out of 3 SMS, so it costs like 3 normal text-SMS.

27. What can Picture-Message Editor do for me?

The editor gives you the possibility to edit these picturemessages on your PC and upload them via SMS to your or any other phone worldwide.

28. What does the Monitor Clipboard feature do?

It monitors the system-clipboard for easy 'grabbing' of graphics e.g. from websites. Just activate the feature, then surf to some website which contains logos or small graphics, click right mousebutton on the picture you want and then 'Copy' in the menu which appears (Microsoft Internet Explorer required), the graphic will then be loaded automatically in the application. If the graphic is too big, a warning is shown and you can scale it down. The warning can be switched on and off in Edit / Options / Warnings / Before adjusting size. Do not monitor with more applications at the same time, fastest will win in that case :-)
